After Michael Bisping’s recent remarks on Conor McGregor’s possible title shot if he could beat Michael Chandler, current UFC featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski too seems to tread on similar lines as the Britisher when it comes to the Irishman. While speaking to media reps during the UFC 284 media day, Volkanovski did not shy away from claiming that the former double champ had some sort of leeway when it came to bagging title shots in the promotion. The 34-year-old while commending McGregor’s choice of opponent, claimed that a win for the Irishman would most probably bring him right back into title discussion.
Alexander Volkanovski on discussions of Conor McGregor getting a title shot
While not denying the fact that McGregor’s return does bring millions of eyes on the sport itself, Volkanovski also talked about a possible fight for the Irishman against Chandler.
“Obviously, it’s always good to have Conor coming back to the sport. He brings a lot of eyes. That will be a fun fight as well.” Stated Volk.
The Featherweight champ also agreed to the fact that it was a winnable fight for McGregor which could eventually open up a pathway to the title: “I think it’s clever for both of them. Clever for Conor because he can go and fight, they’re both powerful dudes, obviously, it’s a winnable fight because they’re just going to go for it. It’s going to be entertaining.“
“That just puts Conor right back in the conversation for the belt and all that type of stuff.” Continued the 34-year-old.
Interestingly, the former Rugby player is trying to accomplish what McGregor himself achieved in 2016 i.e to win the featherweight and the lightweight world title.
Volkanovski on a possible fight against ‘The Notorious’
While reiterating the fact that the former double champ still commands a massive popularity, the Australian also mentioned how McGregor always only fought the best guys.
“At the end of the day, it is Conor McGregor. When you pull in those types of numbers — and you’ve got to remember, he is always taking on the good guys as well.” Stated Volkanovski.
When further asked about a possible lightweight title defense against none other than ‘The Notorious’ himself, Volk didn’t seem too intrigued with that idea. Although he did not dismiss the possibility of the fight, the featherweight champ clearly has his sights set on Islam Makhachev as of now.
“It’s interesting,it’s good to look at because I plan on taking that lightweight belt and I’m looking at seeing what’s happening in the division. There’s a lot of potential matchups after this one, but obviously, first I’ve got to worry about what’s in front of me.” declared the featherweight champ.
Ultimately, with hours away from UFC 284, Volkanovski has a different challenge in from of him. Dreams of winning another title definitely come with it’s own set of obstacles, and Islam Makhachev clearly represents the biggest hurdle that the Australian has ever had to face in his MMA career.
